ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY

Event: The Alcorn State University Extension Program in partnership with the Mississippi Association of Cooperatives will sponsor the 19th Annual Small Farmers Conference in Jackson. Pearlie S. Reed, assistant secretary of administration for the U.S.  Department of Agriculture, will serve as the “Women in Business” banquet speaker. “Cultivating the Way…..for Prosperous Generations,” is this year’s conference theme; Barbie Bassett, chief meteorologist for WLBT-TV in Jackson is the keynote speaker. Sessions will be held on a number of topics including, “Let’s Talk” Round Talk discussion, Alternate Energy Opportunities, How to Sell at Farmers Markets, Quality Control and Vegetable Production and Handling, and Value-Added Production. Event: Alcorn State University will host a teacher recruitment day to provide students with pertinent and accurate information about specific fields of work in education. All majors and all classifications are asked to attend this career event. There will also be recruitment for students interested in alternative certification programs for non education majors. Event: Alcorn State University will host Media Day 2010 with visitors including Don Hudson, The Clarion-Ledger; Jimmie Gates, The Clarion-Ledger; Cedric Tillman, Vicksburg-Warren School District; Clara Ross Stamps, Alcorn State University; Charles Sheppard, Alcorn State University; Tim Crisler, Entergy; Jerod Buford, WTYJ-FM; Jerome Myles, WTYJ-FM and WPRL-FM; and Lorman Mass Communications students. A luncheon featuring Alice Tisdale, publisher of The Jackson Advocate, will be held. The event ends with an awards banquet and student accomplishments celebration.

MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY

Event: The President’s Commission on the Status of Women at Mississippi State University presents a self-defense course through a partnership with the university policy department. The program focuses on awareness, prevention, risk reduction, and risk avoidance and then progresses to basic self-defense techniques.

MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN

Event: MUW will host its first To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) House Tour. TWLOHA is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to gather for a night of lyrics and conversation led by Chad Moses, a representative from the TWLOHA organization. Traveling with Moses will be Damion Suomi, Andy Zipf and Lauris Vidal to share their lyrics of pain, hope and redemption. Event: Former Mississippi Governor William Winter and former Mississippi Representative Robert G. Clark will be the keynote speakers at the inaugural Conference of the Thompson-Hamer-Henry-Evers Mississippi Executive Academy for Public Leadership. Luncheon tickets are $25 per individual. “The Mississippi Executive Academy for Public Leadership honors the legacy of outstanding service and leadership to Mississippi by Bennie Thompson, Aaron Henry, Fannie Lou Hamer and Medgar Evers,” said Dr. Marvin Haire, director of MVSU’s Delta Research & Cultural Institute.

DRCI is co-sponsoring the conference with Tougaloo College’s Center for Civic Engagement & Social Responsibility. The event marks the first collaboration between the two organizations and incorporates the annual Robert G. Clark Leadership Lecture Series as part of presentations. UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI

Event: The National Sea Grant Law Center (NSGLC) at the University of Mississippi will host a symposium on “Addressing Uncertainty of Environmental Problems: The Challenges of Adaptive Management.” The symposium’s goal is to raise awareness of national environmental issues and their unique challenges to Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico region. The event also provides networking and professional development opportunities in environmental law for attorneys, national and state government officials and lawmakers. Notre Dame law professor Alejandro Camacho is the symposium’s keynote speaker. The public is welcome to attend but a $50 registration fee is required for the full two-day event.

Event: University Museum is reaching into its vault to create a Southern folk art exhibit featuring important and interesting pieces that have not been displayed in several years, including works by Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, Sister Gertrude Morgan, Luster Willis and M.B. Mayfield. The exhibit opens with a Brown Bag Lecture on Southern Folk Art by Esther Sparks Sprague of the UM Department of History. Bring a lunch and bring a friend. Event: The UM Department of Music hosts a spring choral concert featuring Men's and Women's Glee and Women's Ensemble. Among the evening’s repertoire will be a performance of "Lux Aeterna" conducted by guest composer K. Lee Scott, a renowned musician, teacher and composer best known for his church music. The Men’s Glee will premiere this five-movement work that is scored for men’s choir, piano, flute, cello and timpani, and the performance will be recorded for distribution through Hinshaw Music Publications. The performance is free to the public.

UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER

Event: University of Mississippi Medical Center presents the annual Mini Med School, a series of faculty presentations in March designed to shed light on some of the health mysteries impacting the state. This week, the Southern Remedy radio show will be live with host Dr. Rick deShazo and guest Dr. Honey East, a lipid specialist, taking audience questions.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GULF PARK CAMPUS

Event: The Katrina Research Center at The University of Southern Mississippi will present its latest exhibit, “Haiku and Essays: Word Pictures of Moments in Time,” by Frank Smith beginning March 30. Smith, a resident of Long Beach, is a retired railroad freight conductor. Serving in the Intelligence Service of the U.S. Army, Smith gained an interest in haiku and bonsai while living in Okinawa, Japan, for six years. Haiku, an ancient form of poetry from China and Japan, consists of only 17 syllables within three lines of the poem. The haiku should include a seasonal word to indicate a specific time of year. Event: The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast will host the Southern Miss Jazz and Blues Festival Saturday, April 3. The event is free and open to the public. The musical acts to perform at the festival are the Steve Warren Band, Swampnoise, the Jerry Ball Jazz and Blues Quintet and Southern Miss Jazz Sextet+1. In addition to the musical performances, there will be an Easter egg hunt for children ages 12 and under beginning at 11 a.m. Children can also have their photo taken with the Easter Bunny from 10 a.m. – noon. The Shed BBQ and Blues Joint Highway 53, Ziggy’s and Port City Café are among a variety of food and drink vendors to take part at the festival. Arts and crafts vendors, along with free children’s’ activities, will be set up throughout the festival grounds. The festival is sponsored by Magic 93.7 FM, the city of Long Beach, Lamar Advertising and WLOX-TV. Proceeds will be used to further develop the Southern Miss Gulf Coast Student Government Association. The Southern Miss Gulf Park campus is at 730 East Beach Boulevard in Long Beach.
