Event: As part of Veteran's Awareness Week, Mississippi State President Mark Keenum will be a keynote speaker as part of a program to recognize veterans and highlights the importance of the student-veteran population.

Event: Nobel laureate and best-selling author Joseph Stiglitz will speak at a public event about globalization and economics. He created the branch of study called "economics of information" and was awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Event: A former U.S. State Department official and authority on international security strategies will discuss "A History of Missile Defense and Current Threats from Ballistic Missiles." Kim R. MISSISSIPPI STATE UNIVERSITY DIVISION OF AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND VETERINARY MEDICINE

Event: The Natural Resource Enterprises Workshop is for landowners interested in developing businesses from the natural resources on their property or learning more about wildlife habitat and business management. This program is a partnership of MSU's Extension Service, MSU's Forest and Wildlife Research Center, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Event: The MSU Extension Service presents the seventh annual Piney Woods Heritage Festival celebrating the region's early days with exhibits and demonstrations on traditional methods of blacksmithing, woodcarving, spinning, basket-making, and a host of other heritage crafts and skills.

MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN

Event: The Culinary Arts Institute at MUW has partnered with Dr. Jacqueline Hampton, a local physician, and NovoNordisk, a healthcare company specializing in diabetes care, to do a series of diabetes education classes. The first class will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 28, and will feature senior culinary arts major Stephanie Ward, who will demonstrate healthy snacks and tailgating ideas. The second class will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, and will feature AnHoward Schubert, another senior culinary arts major, who will prepare diabetic-friendly recipes for the holidays.

Event: The artwork of five graduating seniors at MUW will be displayed at the Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibit will feature paintings, drawings, photography and design work. An opening reception will be held Friday, Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI GULF PARK CAMPUS

Event: First Oil Painters of America Great Paint Out on the Mississippi Gulf Coast will be held at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. Each fall, OPA members nationwide spend a day painting outdoors during the Great Paint Out. Members volunteer to coordinate paint-outs in their state so local artists have an opportunity to meet, paint, observe and learn from one another. The Great Paint Out, sponsored by Pat Walker, OPA and Sandy Shaver of Caboose Art Gallery, is free and open to the public. Guests can bring their own lunch or purchase a boxed lunch at the event. Event: University of Southern Mississippi will host the fourth Poets at Gulf Park poetry reading of 2009 at the Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. The theme for the reading is "Visions of NOLA" with New Orleans poets Dave Brinks and Bill Lavender presenting. An open microphone session for audience members who wish to share their own favorite poetry will begin after the scheduled readers. The poetry reading is free and open to the public. ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY

Event: With all of the options available to today's high school and community college students, deciding which college to attend can often be a daunting task. To help high school and community college students learn more about opportunities available at Alcorn, the institution is hosting its fall High School and Community College Day, a chance for students and parents to experience Alcorn firsthand.
When: Saturday, Nov. 14

SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES

  • 8-9 a.m. – Registration will be at the E.E. Simmons Gymnasium, all students and chaperones will sign in and receive their wrist bands for complimentary lunch and ASU football game.
  • 9-10:30 a.m. – General Assembly includes a talented D.J. and features appearances from ASU Drum Line, ASU Gospel Choir, Greek strolls, plus giveaways.
  • 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. – Campus tours and showcase in the James L. Bolden Campus Union Ballroom featuring academic schools and departments as well representatives from the Financial Aid Office, the Business Office and the Registrar's Office, plus a tour of the mock room representing a new era of living at Alcorn.
  • 12-2 p.m. – Lunch
  • 2 p.m. – Alcorn State University Braves vs. Prairie View A&M at Jack Spinks Stadium
