Energy Efficiency Efforts

The IHL System has saved $95 Million through reduced energy consumption and efficiency efforts since 2006. There has been a 23% reduction in system energy intensity, even with a 20% growth in square footage over the same period.

The IHL Energy Council tracks performance and posts monthly data online that is updated on a quarterly basis. Click here to view the latest Energy Council report.

Savings were found through many initiatives, including:

Use of thermal storage units
Lighting retrofit projects
Installation of smart meters and building controls
Replacing out of date boilers with energy efficient models
Installation of solar panels on buildings

The IHL Energy Council's goals for the next 10 years include:

13% reduction in energy intensity
$52 million in avoided energy expenditures

Group Property Insurance

In 2009, the IHL System implemented a group program for purchasing property insurance. Prior to this program, public universities in Mississippi each secured property insurance policies separately, leading to variances in coverage, deductibles, risk levels and cost. Knowing that in insurance larger pools lead to lower prices, university personnel and staff from the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning collaborated to explore other options.

Prior to implementation of the group program, the universities were paying an average blended premium rate that was 60 percent higher than current rates and the total insured value (TIV) was only about $2.5 billion. Today, the universities are paying much lower rates on a TIV of $9.8 billion. The system-wide approach to insuring state property has saved the universities more than $45 million in premiums alone.

In addition to lowering the rates paid, the system-wide approach has provided consistency in coverage across all universities. In addition to property and contents, universities also insure against losses to rental, business and tuition income and against pandemics, service interruption and environmental events. The group plan has also helped increase the limits on flood and earthquake coverage. With a system-wide approach, the IHL System secured better protection of the state's resources at a lower cost.
